The National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) Mumbai proudly hosted the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) India Chapter’s 8th Professional Development Conference (PDC) on 27th. June 2020 in collaboration with International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH), Scientific Committees on Occupational Health in Construction Industry (SCOHICI) & Rural Health: Agriculture, Pesticides and Organic Dusts.
The conference was supported by two industrial giants, M/S Larson & Toubro and M/S ThyssenKrupp India. The conference, which was supposed to be held earlier in NITIE, Mumbai during 27-28th April 2020 could not be organised due to COVID-19 and subsequent lockdown and hence was organised on the digital platform on 27th June 2020. The conference was coordinated and conducted by Prof. Shankar Murthy from NITIE, supported by a team of Doctorial students; Rohit Panchal, Pawn Kumar and Ramesh Kumar.
The theme of the conference held online was “Striving towards Sustainability through innovation and digitization in HSE” which is most relevant in the current period of the pandemic. The conference was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari, Director of NITIE, who in his speech stressed upon industries to strive for Sustainable Development with an emphasis on resource conservation by adopting latest digital technologies in tune with Industry 4.0. Prof. Vivekananda Khanapuri, Dean Sponsored Research & Industry Connect (SRIC) in his address shared the NITIE’s industry connect and various consultancy assignments undertaken with industries especially in the area of HSE (Health, Safety & Environment). He also stressed upon the contribution of NITIE students from Industrial Safety & Environmental Management (ISEM) program to the industry in the HSE domain. The conference was also attended and supported by Prof. Shirish Sangle, Prof. Seema Unnikrishnan, Prof. Rauf Iqbal and Sri. Basavaraj Swamy, Registrar.
The response to the conference was quite overwhelming with more than 200+ registered participants from across India and Middle East countries like UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi), Oman, Kuwait, Qatar. The expert panellists who participated were from industry, academia and consulting services drawn from various parts of India and Globe. The international panellists from USA, Canada, Netherlands, and Philippines took active part in the conference and shared their vast experience and expertise with the participants. It is extremely heartening to note that these panellists from other parts of the world had participated in this online conference by taking trouble to be awake even in the odd hours of night, due to wide time variations. The conference comprised of three technical and two plenary sessions starting from 9.00 in the morning and ended around 5.00 in the evening, deliberating on the theme and sub-themes of the conference. A panel discussion was held on the theme: Emerging Occupational Safety & Health Challenges – a Multi-disciplinary approach for Sustainable Solutions by experts from academia, industry and consulting fraternity from across the globe. Research scholars from across India shared the glimpses of their research in various areas of Health, Safety & Environment.
The conference was hosted by NITIE Mumbai with Prof. Shankar Murthy as Co-Chair from Environmental Engineering & Management group NITIE and Dr. Krishna Nirmalaya Sen as Chair from ASSP India Chapter.
